Our story

Long before McDonald Hill became a farmstay, the property was known to locals as Dawn Glen Orchard - a thriving citrus orchard on the banks of the Brockman River in the heart of the Chittering Valley.

As you cross the river and wind your way through the property, many of the original citrus trees still flourish today, alongside the old orchard packing shed - a reminder of the families and hard work that once made Dawn Glen a local landmark.

When we discovered the property, we knew its history deserved to be preserved. Our vision was to build on its past, creating a farmstay that blends its rural character with thoughtfully designed accommodation and gives guests a place to slow down and experience the beauty of the Chittering Valley.

Meet your host

McDonald Hill is proudly owned and operated by Jack McDonald, who lives on the property with his wife in the original 1920s homestead.

A former firefighter and passionate landscaper, Jack has poured countless hours into bringing McDonald Hill to life. From designing and building the outdoor spaces to caring for the animals and maintaining the property, his hands-on approach can be seen throughout the farmstay.

For Jack, McDonald Hill is more than a farmstay - it’s home, and sharing this part of the Chittering Valley with guests is all part of the experience.

Whether it’s hosting Golden Hour in the paddock, sharing his favourite local recommendations or making sure everything is just right for your stay, Jack looks forward to welcoming you to McDonald Hill.

Our vision

McDonald Hill was never intended to be just another place to stay.

It’s a place where mornings begin with valley views and farm-fresh eggs for breakfast. Where afternoons are spent exploring local wineries, relaxing in the plunge pool or unwinding in the private sauna. And where the more adventurous can make their way to the Hilltop Soak, with panoramic views across the Chittering Valley and an outdoor wood-fired bath (season permitting).

Every experience has been thoughtfully designed to help guests slow down, escape the everyday and make the most of their time in the Chittering Valley.
